Urban Learnin
I grew up in an Urban area and love the sites, sounds and vibe of Urban life! It has become a part of mainstream culture which I'm not sure if I like or not... I kind of enjoyed when people were "Urban" for a reason and not just to be part of a trend. I wrote this for my stepson a few years ago. He's been on my heart a lot lately so... FOR JUSTIN You're not my son biologically or historically ...but psychologically, I love you like my own. Since that day in '98 I saw your smile, knew you were great and it must be fate ...that you stepped into our family Yeah, there was drama and tragedy. ...So much time lost and gone but we had to move on and try to right the wrong. ...I watched from afar as you tried to figure out who you are. ...From alternative to hip hop and low fades to fros and corn rows ...And who knows? Maybe we could have done more back then ...to teach you that a black man doesn't have to be a thug Or go to jail and get stepped on, like a rug. ...He doesn't have to curse to stand tall, doesn't have to brawl ....Yeah, he can have it all! A black man doesn't has to be ...what he sees when he watches BET. Yourself should not be the enemy! ...Now here we are in 2000 and 3 me tryin to love you but you're rejectin' me. ...You're feelin' persecuted 'cause you made a choice. You were told to choose between bein' a man or boy. ...Stayin' out late doesn't lead to success it leads to drugs and thuggin and, eventually, arrest. ...(The prophecy fulfilled, another black man oppressed). Disobeyin' your parents and you break the rules ...too tired in the mornin' so you blow off school. Gettin' high on weed while your dreams go up in smoke ...You start regrettin' what you've done then you start to choke back the tears of all the pain through the years and ...bein' attacked by the fears thinkin'... Is this all there is?
